![]() ![]() In addition to the many voices included in Leopard and Snow Leopard, Lion offers the ability to customize speech synthesis by downloading dozens of entirely new voices. But with Mac OS X Lion 10.7, the Mac's ability to talk has taken some big leaps. More than a quarter century later, the Macintosh is still with us, and the Macintosh operating system still includes speech synthesis. The Macintosh operating system, System 1.0, was the first operating system in the world to incorporate speech synthesis. In 1984, this was nothing less than an epic monologue for any computer, much less a tiny computer that Jobs had just pulled out of a bag. So, it is with considerable pride that I introduce a man who's been like a father to me: Steve Jobs. Obviously, I can talk, but right now I'd like to sit back and listen. Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking, I'd like to share with you a maxim I thought of the first time I met an IBM mainframe. When the Macintosh was introduced to the world in 1984, the machine itself spoke to the assembled audience: Speech synthesis has been with the Mac since the very beginning.
